MAYOR GIULIANI JOINS HAITI OBSERVATEUR’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed Friday, November 15, 1996, as « Haiti Observateur’s 25th Anniversary Day. » The proclamation was presented to Leopold Joseph and Raymond Joseph, co-founders and publishers of the newspaper, during a gala benefit held at the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn.
« The Haiti Observateur has made an important contribution to the scope and diversity of our City’s news media, » Mayor Giuliani said. « For twenty-five years, it has provided a voice of independence and integrity that has met the diverse interests of the Haitian community of our City and beyond. From New York City to Chicago…from Paris to Port-Au-Prince, it is a world-class publication that has garnered much praise and recognition for the past two and a half decades. »
Co-founder Raymond Joseph said, « This newspaper is a supermarket of ideas and all consumers should find their products in it. We are not a specialty store tailored to narrow interests. »
The weekly newspaper was launched on July 23, 1971, from a living room on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. It was the first community newspaper for New York’s growing Haitian American community. The Observateur’s motto is « Where there is no vision, the people perish, » and from the beginning it has published all views on every topic.
